Minimize Shedding With Black Tea Hair Rinse for Natural Hair
June 11th, 2013 @ 12:00 pm

If your hair is experiencing a lot of shedding, there is one tried and true remedy that can really work in helping to minimize and reduce this problem. The black tea natural hair rinse is very easily accessible (you can find it at your local grocery store/ health foods store), it is cheap and it is also something I have personally tried  and continue to use to this  day. I remember seeing a SIGNIFICANT reduction in my hair’s excessive shedding. Especially the one time when my hair was shedding like a mad and deranged poodle because I had left my braids in for too long – and I thought I was going to have to start doing the Donal Trump comb-over!

Shedding is just a natural part of the hair cycle and it is something that is going to happen no matter what. Your hair can start shedding excessively because of stress, weight loss, pregnancy, birth control etc. – Regardless, things can get annoying if you start to see more of your hair on a comb or on the floor instead of on your head.

Why black tea?  There is a large amount of caffeine in black tea and this prevents the DHT hormone from working to its highest capacity ( the DHT hormone that is mainly responsible for your hair’s shedding).

Ultimately the black tea hair rinse is best for strengthening  breakage-prone hair and works wonderfully to reduce the amount of hair shedding.

What you will need:

  • 2 bags of black tea
  • 1 spray bottle
  • A cooking pot / kettle
  • 2 cups of water
  • A plastic shower cap
  • A funnel ( if needed)
  • A towel

Directions:

Boil the water in a kettle, pour out 2 cups into a jug and throw in the 2 bags of black tea. Steep the tea for 10-15 minutes, this will allow the ingredients to release, which will also maximize the benefits of the hair rinse itself. After the black tea water has cooled or is lukewarm, pour it using a funnel (if you need one) into a spray bottle.

Divide your hair into 5 sections and spray the black tea onto wet or dry hair until your whole head is drenched in tea.  Apply your favorite hair conditioner after you’ve applied the black tea mixture. Place a cap on your head for 30-45 minutes.

Rinse off the black tea and conditioner and apply your favorite leave in conditioner!

Recommended treatment time

The black tea hair rinse can be done as frequently as 2 times a week. I use it as a  maintenance technique, rather than waiting until the excessive shedding starts (prevention is better than treatment, keep that in mind). It’s best to do this treatment at least 4 times a month for best results.

Have you tried this remedy for black hair shedding, if so, what is your progress so far?

Good morning! I had to report back! Last Friday after I got home from work, I washed my hair as usual. I then saturated with the black tea I had prepared the night before, covered my hair in a plastic cap and let sit for 1 hour. I then rinsed it out and added a moisturizing conditioner for another 15 minutes or so. I did find my hair to be a bit more tangled but I continued with my usual coconut oil, and styling cream, I think it was one of Carol’s Daughter products, and two strand twists. I love the way my hair feels. It’s smooth and soft! I had sister locks for 7 years. I chopped them off December 2013 and I’m eight months into my free-flow journey and learning my hair. Today is Monday and this morning after un-twisitng my hair for work, I looked into the sink to see how much shedding I would have, known! I was amazed! The black tea really does work! To me, I had a lot of shedding. I read somewhere that generally about 100 strands of shedding a day is normal? Whether my hair was wet or dry I had it! But none this morning! I am a believer, the black tea rinse really works! I will use it monthly, I read that to much use (caffeine) can stunt growth, don’t want that! I am really pleased with the results and will incorporate this process monthly! Two thumps up! Below are pictures right after the big chop, 6 months, and 8 months. Finally one with my 7 yrs old locks.
