Natural hair questions and answersDear Jane and Jedi:

My hair has very loose curls when I wash it, but as the day goes on it dries out and starts looking more like an Afro then curls, especially after I sleep on it. It gets all fuzzy, and looks awful.  How do I keep my curls loose and flowy like when I get out of the shower. I live where there is no humidity just plain heat A.K.A the desert.

Also, how I do I keep it moisturized and soft..like when I get out of the shower {Laughing}

The Weave Check: You Have Long Hair…For a Black Girl!

angry-black-woman-hair-journeyMy hair  is longer now (a little past the bra strap) so I usually keep it in protective styles.  One day while wearing my natural hair straight, I came across a Ghanaian lady at the mall – and boy had she drink some some special kind of juice that day! She went absolutely CRAZY and aggressive upon spotting me in line at the food court.

Upon leaving her own line-up, she drifted over to the Wrap place that me and my friend were standing at. Immediately without even a ‘hello’ she cut to the chase by asking me where I got my Yaki. I was taken back and surprised to say the least, I asked myself, ‘who was this super loud and frankly obnoxious woman,  Had I met her before and perhaps forgotten where and when?’  Nope, i had never seen her in my life, yet here she was, talking to me in her ‘outside’ voice as if I was twenty feet away, when in fact she was only two feet away from me. I honestly thought for a moment that she was going to put up her siren and signal me to her police station for an immediate arrest! Continue reading

Is Asking To Touch a Black Woman’s Hair Rude ?

Ever been asked the question : ‘Is that your real hair” only to have somebody ( usually 9.99 out of 10 times its a woman ) reach out and immediately touch your hair as if to verify if whether or you are indeed telling the truth ? I’ve been weave checked while wearing my natural long hair in a simple pony tail and can sometimes remember on more than one occasion times where I’ve had somebody’s grubby hands digging for tracks at the back of my head, all over my head, you name it!

So is it rude to touch a black woman’s hair ? For the most part to be honest I find it annoying, not to mention fairly rude when somebody reaches out and touches your hair without asking if you’re okay with it. It’s got nothing to do with whether at the time I’m wearing my own real hair or not, and it really has nothing to do with the other person’s race or ethnicity who’s wanting to touch my hair, it all comes down to personal space for me and asking if its okay to momentarily get into my personal space.

I remember Back when I was in my teens and still in high school Continue reading

Help! My Natural Hair is not Growing!

Ladies, you’ve all probably experienced that moment where your natural hair decides to be a rebellious toddler and sits down and says “no! I won’t go!” This is the plateau moment. The time you seem to be seeing your hair in a state of “no growth”.  If you hair has been altered chemically, then you know where the possible problem may be branching from.  On the other hand, if your locks are in their natural state, then you’re confused!  Natural hair should be growing with a certain consistency (although some grow faster than others).  If your hair growth has slowed down to an almost non-existent state, you could pin point the problem by considering the following reasons.

5 Reasons Natural Hair Stops Growing

1. Got Build Up?

The scalp is a delicate place. This is the soil that brings forth the crop. If you’ve got weeds, you’ve got problems.  Products can build up on your scalp and prevent the progress of new hair growth.  If you use a lot of products, you can schedule your regime to include a clarifying treatment. You can pick up a clarifying treatment right out of your kitchen. All you Continue reading
