Natural hair questions and answers Dear Jane and Jedi:

My hair has very loose curls when I wash it, but as the day goes on it dries out and starts looking more like an Afro then curls, especially after I sleep on it. It gets all fuzzy, and looks awful.  How do I keep my curls loose and flowy like when I get out of the shower. I live where there is no humidity just plain heat A.K.A the desert.

Also, how I do I keep it moisturized and soft..like when I get out of the shower {Laughing}

Hello Layla:

Living in dry climate makes your hair loose moisture quickly and dry hair leads to breakage.

Some quick fixes to begin:

*Look into purchasing a humidifier. I have one in my room and it’s awesome! It adds moisture into the room that that I’m sleeping in. It helps put moisture back in my skin and hair as I sleep. You will thank the humidifier -especially in dry climate!

*Sleep with a satin scarf or satin pillow. Static causes frizz!

* Starting the curly method on previously stretched hair helps.  You may want to use the aid of flexi rods and curl formers.

More tips…

First thing first: using a towel to dry your hair may be activating static.  This is why you may be getting that frizzy look once your hair dries.  Instead of a towel, try using an old shirt to dry your hair.

Next, the reason your hair may be drying out is because you may not be moisturizing and sealing every day. You don’t have to shampoo and condition everyday.  For myself, personally, I wash and condition on the weekend (either Saturday or Sunday never both). The rest of the week I am sealing and conditioning -twice a month I will do a hair treatment.

Lastly, try the spray bottle routine. Right now it’s winter and the air is dry over here too.  I use the spray bottle everyday!  Some tips on doing a daily moisture and SEAL:

1. Use distilled water mixed with a leave in conditioner and your jojoba oil.
2. Spritz some into your hair as your night time routine. This helps to prep your hair for the morning styling.
3. Every two days, spritz the ends of your hair and cover with a shower cap for half an hour. Be careful that you don’t spray the water directly on your scalp then cover your hair. The moisture can cause bacteria to start growing on your hair and break the skin on your scalp.

There you go Layla. Hope that helps to get you on the soft curls path.
